Industrialising a natural process to yield safe, valuable products, enabling improved sanitation and reduced pollution
The BioCycle is a sustainable business, developing commercially viable and scalable processes for the bio-conversion of human faecal waste into valuable products, using Agriprotein's Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae processing technology.
It is the first venture to emerge from the overall Sanitation Ventures Program, supported by a grant to the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. We are in the process of developing a unique BSF production technology that will allow entrepreneurs throughout the world to generate revenue from waste through its conversion into high value larval products including lubricants, biodiesel, chitosan, and soil conditioners.
The monetisation of human and municipal waste streams will have a major impact in improving sanitation services in developing countries and will help to close nature’s energy and nutrient cycles, leaving nothing to waste.
Our research has been conducted in partnership with the world-class experimental agricultural facilities of the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa and is now being undertaken at our very own state-of-the-art and Agriprotein sponsored research facilities. Our first community based production site was established at the informal settlement of Klipheuwel in Cape Town.
In collaboration with Ethekwini Water and Sanitation we run a commercial scale pilot plant with the capacity to process 30 tonnes of Urine Diversion Toilet resources per day. Here we are proving the scaled model and building the business case to support our global growth.
